E-book Trends

I recently saw some rather shocking publishing statistics — growth in the e-book world has truly skyrocketed.  According to the Association of American Publishers, in the month of June, e-books sales jumped 118.9%. If we look at all of 2010, we see an enormous 204% growth in e-book sales. Holy digital publishing, Batman!  No wonder [...]

The average teenager spends a wopping 30 hours on the internet per week. So what the heck are they doing? The average writer spends a wopping 4 billions hours on the internet per week while avoiding work. So what they heck are we doing?  And why aren’t we connecting with those teenagers? Hmmmm.  Lets analyze [...]

Lost in Translation — some things just don’t cross borders

My husband is French.  As a result, our childhoods were markedly different.  My cultural identity is American, his is French, and there are some things we will just never understand about each other.  He will never laugh at sex jokes, and I will never enjoy stinky cheese. What I’ve found most hilarious are my attempts [...]

Before I Fall: a book recommendation

5 out of 5 stars. Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall is amazing, amazing, amazing. One of the most powerful book I’ve read this year, and easily the most satisfying ending of the year.  It’s Donnie Darko meets Groundhog Day.  I know — you’re thinking WTF?  How does that work? Well trust me.  It works.

The Wussy Scientist Sees Something Pretty April 10, 2008 I smell like shark guts.  Oh well.  It’s only 2 more days until I get to shower.  That’ll be nice.

Travel Diaries: Arctic Adventure

After reading Life As We Knew It, I picked up an old journal of mine.  Some of the experiences in that novel were markedly similar to what I went through in the Arctic doing my MSc field work.  The journal was kind of entertaining to read — at times moving, but mostly just funny – so [...]

Life As We Knew It: a book recommendation

5 out of 5 stars. Susan Beth Pfeffer’s Life As We Knew It was a read-in-one-sitting, stay-up-until-3-AM book.  Though it’s classified as science fiction, it’s more a survival tale than anything else.  A survival tale where I really didn’t know if the main character and her family would live or die.

Writing Communities

A writing community is a group of writers.  Or is it a gaggle of writers?  Not sure why, but gaggle has a better ring. So, redo: a writing community is a gaggle of writers who meet to discuss the writing life, help each other out, or attend workshops.  It’s a great way to connect with [...]

New website design!

I changed the website…  My rapidly improving skills with GIMP plus my growing comfort with CSS meant it was about time to revamp the website.  Let me know what you think — love it?  hate it?  have any suggestions?  Also let me know if anything isn’t working… Happy writing, -S.
