Philadelphia of 1876 was a quite a different place from today’s city–and not just the buildings have changed. Peoples’ lives are much different–and much better–today.

While it’s fun to look back on the Victorian age, the expectations that women be biddable and devote their entire lives to their husband’s happiness made it not that fun a place to actually inhabit. To say nothing of the confining clothes (many women suffered permanent damage to their ribs and organs thanks to corsets)!

Eleanor Fitt knew all to well that trying to leave that world behind, trying to make her own life and her own choices, was an almost insurmountable task for a lady of 1876.
