A Darkness Strange & Lovely giveaways, playlists, and Pacific Rim
So I saw Pacific Rim last night…
Guys, I have been excited about that film for almost a year now–ever since I first heard about it at San Diego Comic-Con last year. Honestly, it’s rare that I anticipate a film or get even remotely excited about its launch. It’s even more rare that I go see a film as soon as it opens.
But man, Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim, guys.
This movie blew my mind. It was everything I wanted and more. I’m not usually an action movie person–I like characters more than explosions…
But MAN, Pacific Rim!
It had characters that were developed just enough for me to love and action that didn’t make my eyes glaze over. Plus, there was a kickass girl–like, kickass–and it was so refreshing to see her. And refreshing to not have romance.
It was the world, though, that really got me. The details was so insane–from the Shatterdome to the Bone Slums to the inside of the Jaegers. WOW. It was everything my inner tween, who was obsessed with Robotech/Gundam Wing, Blade Runner, and basically mecha & gritty sci-fi of any kind, wanted to see. Hell, it was everything the adult me wanted too, and I hope-hope-hope we see more mecha and more Pacific Rim stuff in the future.
Basically, it was so good that Sarah J. Maas and I have already established an in-depth self-insert fan-fiction (we’re Jaeger neural co-pilots, of course) and are trying desperately to get our hands on some Gipsy Danger flight jackets.
Anyway, you guys should go see it. And then you jam to its awesome movie score by one of my fave composers, Ramin Djawadi. The theme makes me want to swagger like they are in the picture above.
A Darkness Strange and Lovely releases in just over 10 days! WOOHOO. I’ve got a Tumblr giveaway going on (just reblog to be entered) and there’ll be more giveaways on the Twitter/Facebook horizon next week. 😉
The lovely people over Epic Reads and Pitch Dark have also posted some fun extra content for readers of the Something Strange and Deadly series. There’s the 5 quick-fire questions about impulse over on Epic Reads…
And then the official playlist for A Darkness Strange and Lovely over on Pitch Dark! You can click through to read about each song and why I chose it, or you can just jam to the playlist below. 🙂
Otherwise, my life has been a bit crazy (lots of critiquing for various wonderful peeps with deadlines), so I’m sorry I don’t have a more content-rich blog post for you. You can always head over to Pub(lishing) Crawl, where Marie Lu has an awesome post (that really resonated with me).
Hope you’re all well! NOW GO SEE PACIFIC RIM!

Okay, so I guess I have to go see Pacific Rim now. I was never very moved by the trailer–seemed way too heavy on explosions and action for me. Like you, I prefer character dev, even in my action flicks (eg: Pitch Black!). But the world-building here sounds baller. And no-romance also sounds refreshing…
Yeah… I think I need to see this. 😉

Dude, it was amazing. Ridiculous and over-the-top and yet AMAZING. It just brought back all the feelings of seeing sci-fi as a kid. I *really* think you’ll like it. And let me know when you see it. 😉

Ooh, I’ve been wanting to watch Pacific Rim since I heard the line “Today, we are cancelling the apocalypse!” but didn’t really know what it was about! It’s kind of funny how they just used the Japanese word for monster to refer to the aliens though, haha! And whoaa, it’s called the robots are called Jaegers?! It sounds like Tumblr would have a field day crossing over Pacific Rim and Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan (it’s an anime that came out of nowhere and is suddenly EVERYWHERE. The main character is called Eren Jaeger and I think the monster associations are inevitable if you’ve watched it). Glad you had fun with the movie! <33
PLAYLIST!!! Will listen after reading SS&D! (or maybe during?)

Well, Jaeger means “Hunter”, so I figure that’s why they named it that. And they say the Kaiju are called Kaiju because of the Japanese word–and I think the first attack happens in Japan, maybe? Idk, but I think a rewatch is in order soon. 😉 ‘Cos dude, it’s SO good. It’s like watching Gundam Wing or Robotech in REAL LIFE. Also, I am totally looking up Attack on Titan. That sounds like my kind of story.

Sooz, you’ve officially made me want to see Pacific Rim, which I’d never really even heard of before. Also, if you love mecha stuff you should watch the anime Code Geass (if you haven’t already). It is quite literally amazing. Incredible world and some awesome mecha, called Knightmare Frames. I still watch episodes randomly two years after first watching it, because it is just so damn good. It’s made by Sunrise, the same people that made Gundam. You should watch it! And if you do, let me know what you think 🙂

I saw this post before I saw Pacific Rim and it made me laugh. I was thinking to myself, yeah, Sooz would totally dig that. And then I saw it. And holy crap. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE AMAZING. I won’t lie, when my husband said that’s what we were going to see I was like, okay, I can watch monsters and robots fighting for an hour or so. And then I got SO into it. I was squeezing his hand through half the battle scenes because they were so intense and when one of the Kaiju picked up Gipsy Danger and started to fly away? I could hardly wrap my brain around that for a second. I was definitely thinking of Gundam, too as I was watching it and it made me love it more. I’m so glad I went to see that movie!
And the soundtrack! AH!!!! I had chills through half the movie just because of the music.
Anyway….. Cannot wait until A Darkness Strange and Lovely comes out!!!! I loved the novella. 🙂
P.S. I can completely picture you and Sarah in a Jaeger together. That is an absolutely crystal clear image in my head now. Love it. You two never fail to make my day happier. <3

I haven’t seen Pacific Rim yet, but I do want to! It sounds like such a good movie, and I love that it had a good balance of character development and story and action.
