About Susan
I’ve come a long way from small-town Georgia. Working in marine biology, I got to travel the world—six out of seven continents, to be exact (I’ll get to you yet, Asia!)—before I settled down as a full-time novelist and writing instructor.
I’m the author of the Something Strange and Deadly series, as well as the New York Times bestselling Witchlands series, and I also host the popular newsletter for writers, the Misfits & Daydreamers. When not writing, I’m slaying darkspawn (on my PS4) or earning bruises at the dojo.
I live in the Midwestern US with my French husband, two spoiled dogs, and two grouchy cats. Learn more about me on my twitter, instagram, or newsletter.
The Full Backstory
I’ve come a long way from small-town Georgia, where I suffered from mosquitoes, humidity, and a desperate desire to live in a castle. There were also hippie vegetarian parents involved. Needless to say, I read a lot in those days and often composed wretched stories for my sister’s amusement (basically, I DMed your entire childhood, sis. You’re welcome).
Eventually, I went off to university, got a Masters in marine biology and statistics, and thought I would devote my life to saving the world from overfishing…
Until I met a handsome Frenchman, that is.
A year later, when it came to pursuing my PhD or joining aforementioned Frenchie in Europe, I chose the latter (duh). With no oceans nearby and a rather dissatisfying day job, I turned my attention to writing for publication. Three years later, my debut novel, Something Strange and Deadly was published by HarperCollins, which some people called a “masterpiece” (those people were my parents).
All three books — and the prequel novella — are now in stores! Also be sure to look for my more recent New York Times bestselling Witchlands series — the first four are on shelves. Or, you can read my free novel, The Executioners Three on Wattpad.
These days, I spends most of my time writing more novels or teaching aspiring authors. I also enjoy long walks on the beach — no joke! Tidal pools are always fun to marine science nerds. I also enjoy long walks with my dogs (an Irish setter named Asimov and a terrier mutt named Princess Leia), karate, gaming (I have a Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and gaming PC. And oh yes, I also clearly have a problem), and — of course — reading. Science fiction, fantasy, literary — all genres are consumed with enthusiasm.
Oh, and my favorite food is cookies. Without gluten. I consume those with enthusiasm, too.
