Natchez, Mississippi was a popular stop for steamboats on the Mississippi River. As an important city in the 19th century cotton industry, steamboats would land all day, every day.

The wealthy of the city lived on a high bluff overlooking the river, while the poor clustered along the shore. That lower area, known as Natchez-Under-the-Hill, was so crime-ridden that, for a while, it was one of the most dangerous stops along the river.
