Some Random Facts about Me
A few weeks ago, when I asked you guys to give me topic ideas, someone gave me a ton of questions about ME. Like, questions of the what’s-your-favorite-color variety, so I thought, why not answer those questions and hear about what YOU guys like too!
So onward.
Favorite color: It’s a three-way toss up. I love me some sea foam green for living space–walls, specifically. I adore that yellowy green of a full-grown pasture (especially when the wind whips through it and makes the green shift and flip). Then pretty much any shade of the sea is guaranteed to make my lungs relax, my heart swell, and my general happiness soar.
I can tell you that pretty much EVERYTHING in that picture of Howl’s Moving Castle is my favorite. The green, the metal gray, the spray of flowery colors, the lake, the stormy sky…I have that image as my background for my phone and both my computers–and it has been the background for years now. I just feel instantly relaxed every time I see it.
Favorite food: Cookies. Duh. But cookies aren’t practical for every meal (sorry, but their nutrition value is almost nil), so in addition to cookies, I think my favorite food would have to be drunken noodles–spicy drunken noodles. Mmmm, Thai food makes me happy.
Favorite books: I CAN’T PICK JUST A FEW. But I can pick a few favorite authors–how about that? Robin Hobb, Sherwood Smith, Susanna Clarke, Lloyd Alexander, Garth Nix, Ursula K. LeGuin, Agatha Christie, M.K. Hobson, Tamora Pierce, Sharon Shinn,
Favorite movies: My favorite comfort movies are the original Star Wars trilogy, the first three Indiana Jones, Anastasia, the Mummy, Never Been Kissed, Jurassic Park, BBC’s Pride & Prejudice mini-series, and all of the LOTR.
My favorite “deeper” movies are Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees, the new Fright Night, Spirited Away, Amelie,
Favorite TV shows: Avatar the Last Airbender, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, Psych, Battlestar Galactica, Coffee Prince
The most fun place I’ve ever been (and will go back to FOREVER) is Disney World in Orlando. Words cannot express how much I adore Epcot.
As for the place that I love visiting and feel so dreamy every time I’m there, I’d have to say Paris. There’s really no city on earth like it, and though I would never want to live there, I do love exploring it with my husband (see why a few questions down…).
What are your hobbies? I used to have hobbies. Then I became a writer and stopped most of my hobbies. It is shameful. I used to be obsessed with karate and kickboxing. I used to sing. I used to play video games and read like a maniac. But these days? My hobbies mostly include playing with my dogs, working on the new house with my husband, and writing–because yes, even though it’s my profession, I still write for fun every spare second I have.
Do you sing in the car? YES. LIKE A BOSS. I sing so freaking loud, I could break eardrums. I also sing in the shower, in the kitchen, and pretty much anywhere people won’t see/hear me. My dogs are my biggest fans; my cats hate it.
What TV show are you hooked on right now? Currently, I’m binge-watching King of Dramas, which is AMAZING and way, way more compelling/edge-of-my seat than I expected. If you guys enjoy K-dramas of the more intense/dramatic variety minus the major melodrama…but that still has romance and character growth, I highly suggest this one. I started it on Saturday, just to see what it was like…and I didn’t move for a day. Even my husband is hooked.
What is the best date you’ve ever been on? Uh…though it’s not really a date, the most romantic thing my husband and I ever did was see Paris together. The first time we went there was to visit his family (because he’s from Paris), and it was unforgettable. My husband was my tour guide and we were still relatively “new” in terms of a being a couple (i.e. ridiculously, sickeningly in love). Even though it rained everyday and I had a horrible cold, we were just blissful as we roamed from crêperies to museums to espresso bars to parks. My husband actually said to me afterwards, “I never understood why people always called Paris the city of love until I went there with you.”
We’ve been back to Paris several times since, and EVERY TIME it is just the most romantic and dreamy trip ever. If you’ve ever seen Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson’s character totally gets it.
What are you most excited for right now? Two things: Arrested Development Season 4 (which comes out IN MAY!!!!!!)…
And Taken by Erin Bowman, which RELEASES TOMORROW!!!!!!!!
GAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
Now it’s your turn! You tell me some of YOUR favorite things!

You are awesome! All of those films and tv programmes are SPOT ON! All my favs too. You’ve got me wondering whether I should go to Paris with my husband. Only ever been there as a child. Maybe it would be different… 🙂

The only time I’d ever been to Paris was with my family, and it as meh…Something about being there in LOVE makes it all the more amazing. Or maybe that’s just me. 😉

That painting, I’m 99.99% sure was done by Studio Ghibli, if not Hayao Miyazaki himself. I have the Art of Howl’s moving castle (the movie it’s from) somewhere, I think, I’ll have to look it up. I LOVE that story, and that movie.
I want to do martial arts for a hobby SO badly. I’m pretty sure it’s ridiculous how much I’d love to feel like a real life ninja. I once took fencing lessons, sadly, just when I started we moved away, and our new place didn’t have any lessons nearby.
Ahhh!!! I cannot WAIT for AD season 4. Also, this is funny, but my bf and I have King of Dramas as our next one to watch. We were going to start Saturday, but he left on business for a week…and a whole week break between kdrama episodes…well it’s not usually something I do easily. I might push it out a few more weeks though, because sometimes those dramas suck me in so bad it’s hard to get any thing else done…
Veronica Mars, AD and Psych for favorite TV shows yay! Although…I’m going to be honest, sometimes I worry a bit about Psych. I can’t decide if they’ve jumped the shark. Every now and then this season it seems like they have…
Also, I give honorable mention to My princess (the kdrama that got me into kdramas, minus the last episode) and Secret Garden, because it’s my favorite.
I love all the random facts you’re sharing. 🙂
Oh and on Friday I got a notice Taken has shipped…yay! I’ll have it tomorrow!

Ack! I didn’t need to explain it was from HMC, anyway, I checked it IS a Hayao Miyazaki painting. He made it for concept art for the movie, and yes, he is so flipping talented, it’s unreal. <3

I got my TAKEN ship notice today! WOOHOO!!!!
And dude, King of Dramas is SO GOOD. It’s not nearly as fluffy/ridiculous as the other dramas I’ve watched (and don’t get me wrong, I adore the fluffy rom coms), nor is it as melo as the melodramas I’ve seen. I was surprised by the intensity, but I am TOTALLY sucked in. I just love how evil and horrible the hero is (a real anti-hero, actually).
I really want to get back into martial arts, but I’m lazy. Seriously. I go through spurts of being super fit and active…then a deadline comes and all movement STOPS. It’s terrible.
And yay! I’m so glad to know it’c Miyazaki concept art. I’m not sure I’ve ever looked at his actual art (just the films). I must go do that now. 😀

!!!! A fellow K-drama watcher! I’ve been eying “King of Dramas”, but sadly my internet access has gone down… Last month I did get to watch “Flower Boy Next Door”- except for the LAST EPISODE. It’s killing me. Anyhow- it’s a simple, sweet series that I have come to adore. If you like K-dramas, I would suggest one of my favorite Korean movies, “Sunny”.
You said cookies were your favorite- what KIND of cookies? White chocolate macadamia nut for me! YUM. Or molasses. Or do French macaroons count? Maybe just a prettily-iced sugar cookie? ^.^
Susan Dennard
April 15, 2013 @ 4:47 pm
MOLASSES!! Ginger molasses are totally my most favorite cookie of all time. OF ALL TIME. 🙂
And dude, if you watch King of Dramas, let me know. I am SO HOOKED–like even more than I normally get hooked… 😉

This is such a great post. 🙂 It makes me want to go to Paris with my boyfriend … and it makes me wish I could just hop over the Atlantic to one of your book signings so I could get my copy of SSaD signed and meet you in person!
Firefly, eh? I’m re-watching Firefly at the moment, just curling up in bed and watching an episode on my laptop (best viewing experience EVER, thanks to the amazing headphones my boyfriend got me for Christmas! Seriously – ALL THE SOUNDS!) whenever I feel like it. Seeing Firefly again just … takes me somewhere else. Every time I watch it I can’t quite believe they never made another series. ;_; (Yeah, Serenity movie and comics, I know, but still …)
Other favourite TV – Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad – oh, and The Vampire Diaries is my Guilty Pleasure TV of choice. I used to watch it with my sister when we lived closer, and after each episode we’d read the TV.com photo recap by Price Peterson (http://www.tv.com/news/the-tvcom-photo-recap-treasury-26826/ ) and laugh ourselves stupid. We still discuss every episode on the phone. 😀
Yes to all your TV and movies, in fact (Battlestar Galactica does Friends-style intro here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ytxzD5uBBA ) – I love the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice, and wonder: have you seen the BBC three-part series of Sense and Sensibility? And since you are a Studio Ghibli fan, have you watched Princess Mononoke (my co-favourite with Spirited Away; I once cosplayed San!) and what did you think of it?
Your author list contains a lot of names I would like to know better: Robin Hobb and Tamora pierce particularly. I loved Garth Nix’s Sabriel series. I’d recommend Kristin Cashore’s Seven Kingdoms trilogy if you haven’t discovered it already. 🙂
One more thing: I know you’re into movie soundtracks, so what is your favourite soundtrack of all time?
Susan Dennard
April 19, 2013 @ 4:15 am
I rewatched Firefly (round #3) a few months ago. My favorite, favorite, FAVE episode is the “Out of Gas” one. It kills me EVERY TIME.
And of course I’ve seen Princess Mononoke! I love it too, but I think Spirited Away has a wee bit more of my heart. Not sure why…
My most favorite soundtrack? Goodness…I don’t know! I definitely adore the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack A LOT (it’s basically all I listened to when drafting SS&D the series)…I also really, really, really adore the How to Train Your Dragon score. Not sure what it is about that, but it ALWAYS makes my heart soar and my toe tap.

Cool fun facts, Susan! Like you, I also love colors of the sea. Just about anything in blues and greens and grays are my favorite. I’ve always wanted to travel to Europe, and Paris would be fun, but I kinda see what the Frenchman means by it being called the City of Love, but not really understanding that unless you’re there with someone you’re totally in love with. Someday, perhaps…
I enjoy so many things. I love animals, particularly horses and cats (no surprise there, huh?) Some of my fave tv shows ever are Supernatural, Pushing Daisies, The Walking Dead, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and True Blood. My fave movie ever is THE MATRIX (I’ve watched it so many times, I can quote nearly the entire film frame by frame…which is much nerdier in words than in my head!) Hobbies: horse-back riding, painting, drawing, reading, writing, running/exercise/outdoorsy stuff. Warm summer days and rainy summer afternoons are so relaxing. I have a super-big, non-creepy crush on Norman Reedus (can I get a holla!) I love cookies, too, especially fresh-from-the-bakery chocolate chip, though my fave dessert is strawberry shortcake (it’s the Southern-gal in me!) I love, love, LOVE books! I could go on and on for days about my fave authors and books. I love so much fantasy/sci-fi/horror/thriller. Some of my fave books, in a flash: THE NIGHT CIRCUS, PURE and FUSE by Julianna Baggott, CINDER and SCARLET by Marissa Meyer, DEARLY DEPARTED and DEARLY BELOVED by Lia Habel, every book written by Cassandra Clare, just about anything written by Stephen King, anything by Brenna Yovanoff. I love Neil Gaiman and can’t wait to meet him this summer. Author events are always so much fun! Oh, and I simply adore SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY by, well, YOU! 😉 My favorite literary character ever is Magnus Bane (I wish he could be real so we could be best friends. I think he’d be OK with that, don’t you? If for nothing else than to be constantly amused by my Southern accent and unrelenting clumsiness.) I wish I could listen to music while writing, but it’s way too distracting. I do enjoy soundtracks in order to get inspiration BEFORE I write. I really recommend THE WALKING DEAD soundtrack (which just came out a couple weeks ago) for darker, moodier atmosphere. My favorite soundtrack is from PUSHING DAISIES, just for it’s whimsy and all-around general loveliness.
And on an end-note, I HAVE to read TAKEN!!!! I hope I can get it soon. It sounds SOOOOOO good 😀
Susan Dennard
April 19, 2013 @ 4:17 am
OOOH WALKING DEAD SOUNDTRACK? I was not aware of this. I will be looking it up STAT.
Also, The Matrix. That’s definitely on my list too (but only the first one), and I can’t believe I forgot it! Thanks for the reminder. 😉
And dude, I totally share your huge, non-creepy Norman Reedus crush. The man is just so appealing in this atypical way.

Yes, LOTR, ATLA, and Spirited Away! Such great shows!
I’ve always been drawn to autumn colours like deep reds and gold and russet, but strangely, my favourite colour is green, haha! Cool colours are nice to balance them out though, so yay blues! Asian food is my favourite (Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian, probably every Asian food really), but I do still love Italian and French desserts! Ahh, with books I definitely agree with Tamora Pierce. Her MCs are amazing kickass women (although I do tend to side-eye her choices for their romantic partners, especially Nawat).
With TV shows, mine are mostly anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Durarara, Zetsuen no Tempest, Kimi to Boku, and Kuroko no Basket are the first to come to mind. Live action would probably be Otomen and Elementary, the CBS adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. The way the Holmes/Watson dynamic is portrayed is AMAZING. Just generally the way they handled the characterizations and relationships in the show is good. You never feel like the show is only about Sherlock because everyone has their own story, even if we see only hints of it. And of course, the fact that even though Watson is a woman, she and Sherlock are just friends.
I want to say Game of Thrones as well, but the way the second season (and seemingly the third) was handled– the characters just felt so WRONG. One example would be Robb Stark’s marriage to Jeyne Westerling (Talisa in the show). In the books, he married her because of his honour, and because he’d known that if he’d gotten her pregnant, the lady he’ll eventually marry will hold his bastard child in contempt, and he didn’t want another Jon Snow/Catelyn Stark relationship to happen. In the show, he fell in love with “Talisa” and married her despite everyone’s protests. It’s just really badly translated.

I stopped watching GoT after season 1. I adored the first season, but season 2 immediately repelled me. I don’t know why–I LOVE the series, but I’m not a hardcore fan. I think it was just all the gratuitous sex that got to me. I’m really tired of seeing titties for now reason, OKAY? 😉
AND CRAP. How could I forget Sherlock? The British one, I mean. I haven’t seen Elementary yet (though I definitely want to). I love Johnny Lee Miller. (Side note: have you seen in him Emma? AMAZING. And so adorable.)

Hahaha. <3 I'll tell him you said that. He used to be a pretty swoony guy. These days we're just a boring old fuddy duddy married couple…

The art work in questions is definitely from the beautiful movie “Howl’s Moving Castle”. One of my favorites!

I knew it was Howl’s Moving Castle, but I didn’t know who had painted that particular image. Turns out it’s the man himself–Miyazaki. 😀

Teals–yessss.
Dude, Marion Zimmer Bradley!! I was OBSESSED with her books in college. I devoured everything she had every written. Thanks for reminding me of her. 😉
Also, can I point out that you mentioned Leap Year. If you’re also madly in love with Matthew Goode, than I wholeheartedly approve. <3

Miyazaki is a genius! I’ve loved his movies since I was little.
