But what really makes this day special is that I am now officially allowed to declare “Paperback Writer” by The Beatles as my personal anthem. Okay, not that I particularly identify with the lyrics in this old gem, but it IS one of my all time favorite Beatles tunes.

I am so excited for the paperback because it means that I can afford to buy more copies for my classroom library. I teach 9th grade struggling readers, and I am always looking for great books to hook them on books. I had a bunch of kids read SS&D this year, but since I could only afford 2 hardbacks, it didn’t make the rounds that I had hoped for (since they are struggling, they don’t read very quickly, which means that it takes a while before it can move on to the next lucky reader). So now that I can buy more paperbacks, it means that more kids will get addicted to books 🙂 Also, they always love to read a good series, so when DS&L comes out in July, I am running to my local bookstore to scoop up a couple copies. I already have a few students from my classes last year who are on a wait list to check out your sequel come September. They are almost as excited as I am!!! Thank you for being awesome and keep the awesomeness coming 🙂

Your offer is so generous, but I already bought up a whole arm full of paperbacks yesterday at my local bookstore. Plus, taking the free copies would somehow lessen the compliment I was meaning to pay you. We really love your book, and are eagerly anticipating the next one. So when you are staring at a blank page, or reading a negative review, or dealing with an opinionated publisher hell-bent on making you change things, just remember that there is a annually-changing room full of 9th graders (and one giddy teacher) who will always love your story. Even my male students loved reading about Eleanor, and that’s a big deal. Boys don’t usually want to read books about girls, especially books with a girl in a ball gown on the cover, but they loved Eleanor. Authors like you are helping to change their perspective of female protagonists. The boys even loved the developing relationship between Eleanor and Daniel, and they don’t do love stories! But they loved yours because it was covered in blood and zombie guts, so that made it cool 🙂 So keep up the great work, and just know that there is a classroom of fans somewhere out here in Southern California.
And, if you could ever convince your publisher to put out hard copies of your novella, ADMW, I would buy those up, too! That novella was SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!! My kids would love to read it!

I want you to know that this comment made me cry–in a good way. I’ve had a rough last few days with my writing, but this comment reminded me that I write so I can share my stories with people like you and your amazing ninth graders–all that really matters in the end is the readers and telling the best story I can. Paperback releases are always soo exciting! As nice and easy it is to have an electronic version, there is something uncomparable about owning a physical copy of a book you love. Plus you can get it signed, which makes the personal value skyrocket. 🙂
