Changing the Focus of My Blog
Hi everyone!! *waves frantically*
It has been 2 months since I last posted–can you believe it? It doesn’t actually feel that long, and I won’t lie: it has been great for my creative self to not have to worry about blogging.
Because, here’s the thing, guys: I’ve run out of things to say when it comes to writing.
I’ve written 560 posts, 38 newsletters, and who knows how much additional content on Pub(lishing) Crawl, Let the Words Flow, and other blogs across the interwebosphere.
That’s pretty insane when you think about it, and to be honest: I’m really proud of what I’ve built. I won three different awards for “Best Writing Blogs” in 2014, and I launched the Misfits & Daydreams (and got to watch that really take off).
I love my newsletter–like love it. It feels wildly intimate, and I find people are more likely to email me directly than they used to be (which is wonderful!). So I will 100% continue to wax poetic about writing, publishing, etc. on there. I’ll also continue to answer all questions put to me in the forum.
But I’d love to take this blog in a new direction.
You see, I’m not just a writer. Like, I actually have a number of hobbies (gasp!) and passions (double gasp!) that have nothing to do with books.
I make bath and body products–makeup too. I tap dance. I go to the dojo three times a week. I have an unhealthy obsession with good, good coffee. I LOVE fashion (even if I don’t always have the guts to follow it), and I love makeup application/techniques even more.
I love dogs (I’m sure you all knew that), and have a weakness for any and all unlikely animal pairings as well as cute baby animals doing cute baby animal things.
I like food (especially gluten-free cookies), and I really care about what sorts of ingredients and chemicals go into my body. So no surprise: I spend a lot of time cooking and finding new recipes to try (especially new gluten-free cookie recipes).
I enjoy DIY house projects. My husband and I bought a wreck of a house two years ago, and since then, we’ve been fixing it up all by ourselves–and on a very tight budget. No surprise: but I’m a huge fan of Ikea hacks and yard sales. 😉
Maybe a lot of you already know this stuff about me, but I’d love to dig more deeply into all these things and to connect with other people who are interested in them as well. Plus, I think it would give YOU ALL, my incredible readers, a deeper understanding of who I am.
I mean, if you enjoy my books or my writing advice, then you might also enjoy understanding where it all comes from. I’m one of those ANNOYING people who sees a life lesson in everything–so be prepared for blog posts in that vein.
Now, I’m not saying I won’t still write about writing or publishing–I absolutely will. And again: I’ll still discuss those things and answer questions in the Misfits & Daydreamers.
But for 2015, I’m going to give this new, fresh direction of content a try.
You tell me: What kind of non-writing stuff would you like to hear about? You can ask me anything–honestly, you can! Or, if you’re not comfortable leaving a comment, don’t ever hesitate to email me directly: susan @ susandennard.com
Also: If you all have ANY QUESTIONS about writing or publishing, I’d still love to get those! Hearing what you guys want to know helps me create content for the newsletter. 🙂

Omg this sounds exciting!! Of course, I’d read you blog about fish crackers, Sooz, so I might be biased lol
But I’m very interested to see all the DIY secrets you want to share (and the dojo!) 😉
Susan Dennard
February 3, 2015 @ 12:05 am
Awesome, Adriana!! I’ll definitely share my DIY secrets…and I was totally planning on talking dojo stuff. 😉

I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to know more about you personally – you are one of my author role models! That’s awesome you enjoy chemical-free makeup, I’m a “crunchy” girl myself.
Susan Dennard
February 3, 2015 @ 12:04 am
Yay for us crunchy peeps!!
Also: thank you for the incredibly sweet comment. <333 I am wildly flattered you think of me as a role model (honestly: you have no idea).

I love this! I’ve actually been following your blog for a long time but haven’t commented until now (at least I don’t think so…unless I have commented and since forgotten). To be honest, I am constantly looking for more blogs by writers that aren’t strictly “writing blogs.” I love to find out what ELSE we have in common or what ELSE they are about. Those are the most exciting connections for me. So personally I am super excited about the new focus here and I can’t wait to see what you come up with to share! 🙂
Susan Dennard
February 4, 2015 @ 12:26 am
Aw, thanks, Jenny! I’m the same in that I’d love to know what ELSE I have in common with my online friends, so hooray! Here’s to sharing! <3

I’d love to hear about your thoughts on other genres, with examples. Such as fantasy like in Lord of the Rings, comedy, horror. Your likes and dislikes. You and I seem a lot alike, and I’d be thrilled to learn more! We love you Sooz!
Susan Dennard
February 4, 2015 @ 12:26 am
Yes! I love pretty much all genres (especially for TV) except…huh, I don’t know! But thanks for the post suggestion–I’ll definitely write about that!

Oh oh oh I wanna hear more about gluten free cookies and homemade makeup and bath products <3 you are awesome Susan! I hope this year holds many great things for you.

February 3, 2015 @ 1:40 pm
Yay, this is so exciting. I’d love to hear about any and all of the things above. One of the best things I’ve found through following your Twitter and the newsletters, forum, NaNo, etc. is how much I enjoy you as a person, not just how much I enjoy your writing.
That sounded weirder than I meant it to. But, in short, here for it all!
Susan Dennard
February 4, 2015 @ 12:27 am
Shucks, Sorcha. What a truly nice thing to say (not weird at all). <3

I also would love to hear about anything you’re willing to blog about! I love reading writers’ blogs to learn more about them personally–somehow that makes them seem more real, and therefore it helps me think that someday I’ll be able to join their ranks as a professional writer, if that makes sense =)
Susan Dennard
February 4, 2015 @ 12:27 am
Because you WILL join the ranks!! 😀 😀 (Also, thanks! <3)

Love seeing this! I remember loving your book recs, TV, & traveling posts…as a TV blogger myself I’m a bit biased here but I’d especially love more TV posts again! 🙂 Also would love to see more about your bath, body, & diy projects and clean eating. I read all of your posts though so I don’t really care what you do as long as you’re having a good time while doing it!
Susan Dennard
February 4, 2015 @ 12:28 am
Seeing as I’ve been binging a number of shows lately, I definitely feel like I can talk about some TV… 😉

I’m all about learning more DIY projects. I’m a big fan of DIY (no surprise since I was an art major, so making things myself is preferable over buying things.) I’d love to know more about bath and body things that you make yourself. Also: gluten-free recipes (especially sweets) that actually taste good! Yes, please!! Thanks, Sooz 😉

February 5, 2015 @ 10:15 pm
Woohoo! More DIYers! I will definitely share all the bath/body stuff and my go-to recipes. <3

if I’m not mistaken I remember once you posted on twitter that you make lip balm? if you do, i’d love to know how you make it 🙂 I also love it when you mention the music that you have been listening to. I always end up adding them to my playlist. So please keep those coming!
tbh I’m much more enthusiastic about your newsletter than the blog because I can read the whole thing from my inbox which works really well while running from one lecture to the other 😀 so the only time I have to read the blog is during the weekends.
love you, sooz ❤
Susan Dennard
February 5, 2015 @ 10:17 pm
I DO make lip balm, and I’m actually *really* proud of the recipe. After much trial and error, I have one that people seem to ADORE–and I will totally share that with everyone!

YAY! I’m so super happy to hear this. Your posts and blogs have always been an amazing resource for writers, but I think that’s just half the fun. Getting to know the person behind it makes that much more personable and memorable.
I can’t wait to hear about anything and everything from you! Especially your love of sci-fi stuff likes Star Wars or tv shows like the avatar! Or even how u first got into musical scores.
Can’t wait! 🙂
Susan Dennard
February 15, 2015 @ 5:13 pm
Thanks, Fia!! 😀 I like the idea of sharing my OBSESSION with Avatar. 😉 (Also, sorry for the slow reply! Somehow I missed this!)

I absolutely LOVE reading your writing advice! I has helped me soooo much. If I ever come across a problem, I just read some of your advice and it gets me back on track! I would love to know how you make your own make up. I try to use cruelty-free products, which are so hard to find, so I would love to learn how to make your own. Another thing I would love, since I saw cookies in there, to know some of your recipes. I would also love to know some of your book/TV show/etc recommendations. Sorry that’s a lot!
Susan Dennard
February 15, 2015 @ 5:14 pm
Aw, thanks, Lizzie! I’m so glad you like my writing stuff. :)))
And that’s not a lot at all–the more topic ideas I get, the better!! <3

I think branching out is always good for the soul. Since I am new to your blog and all of the helpful advice, I need to rifle through your archives for writing inspiration and tips.
Good luck on the new adventure. Can’t wait to see it.

February 13, 2015 @ 7:35 am
Yay! I’m excited to read all about your hobbies and interests, especially since I love most of the same things (especially dogs, but excepting gluten free cookies – I love me some yummy gluten!) Also, good for you for giving yourself permission to take your blog in a different, more freeing direction! I look forward to hearing about the ways you keep yoursefl sane 😉
Susan Dennard
February 15, 2015 @ 5:15 pm
Thanks, Renate!! I have to say, it took me a while to give myself this permission. I got two nasty emails in the past 2 years after I *dared* write non-writing posts or try to self-promote, and that just really GOT to me, you know? But haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate… 😉

February 15, 2015 @ 8:23 pm
Well, you know what they say, haters gonna hate, alligators gonna alligate…you just forward that hate mail on to people who care about YOU and have your best interests at heart, and let them encourage you!
Also, I love that you listen to Taylor Swift. She is my jam.

This is pretty much music to my ears. I’ve followed your blog for a while now and love it. Then when I started following you on Twitter, it was awesome to see a more personal side of you. So I think it would be so great for you to start pulling from your personal life and other interests for blogging material!
I’d really love to see DIY things and how you two decorated on a budget. Living in a tiny NYC apartment, I’m always searching for ways to make the best use of my small space, and there are all these vintage shops around with beautiful pieces that I’d love to incorporate but don’t know how!
Very excited for this new direction!

March 8, 2015 @ 2:09 am
Ah, decorating on a budget! YESSS. I can definitely talk about this–though quick hint: junk shops and DIY. That’s the key. I like to browse pinterest and catalogs, and then figure out what *I* can make (or find) for cheaper. 😉

I’d love to hear your thoughts/reviews on anime/movies/video games. Also it would be cool to hear more about your dojo and what kind of martial art you’re taking. Oh and it would also be cool if you shared your ideas on how you’ve renovated/decorated your home on a tight budget. I’m obsessed with looking up home decor ideas on pinterest and seeing what others have done. I’m on a tight budget as well so I’d love to learn new ideas.

Oh my goodness how did I not see this post until now?! Yes Sooz, I’d LOVE for you to share your passions and hobbies with us! Because I totally connect with all of the ones that you mentioned! (Even coffee, although I’m much more of a tea drinker, but there are exceptions!) I love this idea! A thousand yeses! 🙂
