One thing that I’ve noticed in my writing career so far is that my confidence in my own abilities constantly wavers. Some days, I’m certain that The Spirit-Hunters is top-notch stuff. Other days, I want to cry at the certainty that I’m just wasting my time. I’m not just wasting my time – no one […]
I know, I know. I am officially MIA, and I’m sorry. I only have one more week of hard, life-consuming revisions. Then it’s on to the easier stuff, and I promise I’ll be back. So a quick post for today. It’s about eating your elephant.
We, as humans, label ourselves. It’s a fact of life, though we often insist that labels are detrimental. But, if you think about it, all nouns are just…well…labels. They’re words that apply to some person, place, or thing, and those words enable us to identify persons, places, and things. The part that people dislike about […]
Ahh, the rains of spring have arrived here in our German village, and with them, the first flowers and new leaves. Inside my cozy home, the weather is just the same. My manuscript and I are raising a veritable hurricane, and already I can see the gleam of polished prose. Revisions are my favorite part […]
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don’t.” –Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy As bizarre as it may sound, I still find it utterly depressing when I think about Douglas Adams’ passing in 2001. It’s been almost nine years, and yet my heart gives a little […]
The Inner Editor is the perfectionist in you. It’s that part of your brain that tells you, “No matter how great your writing is, it’s not good enough.” It’s a debilitating disease, IE. You can never finish a project because it never lives up to the inner editor’s standards. You’re unwilling to share your work with others because […]
I haven’t much energy for the blog today. I fear it all drained away during my massive writing session this morning and afternoon. As such, I will simply leave you with this beautiful quote form Ursula K. Le Guin in 1977.
Oh, how the time flies when you’re stuck with family. You blink and suddenly realize you’ve done nothing for two weeks but eat, argue, and return Christmas presents. Not to mention, all that writing flow and inspiration you had so carefully honed, and maintained has now flown off with Santa Claus. That’s why today’s post is […]
9 days until Christmas! Too many cooks spoil the broth. Have you ever been so overwhelmed by all the experts, by all the blogs meant to help us, or by all the workshops with different (and perhaps contradictory) approaches to writing that you sit paralyzed at your keyboard? You’re certain that your WIP has committed […]
A bit more on inspiration today since it’s just been One of Those Days. But, it’s been an Awesome One of those Days. After over a month of outlining and research, I finally started writing last week. I’m pumping out two scenes per day (that’s, like, 2500 words), and it feels great! I’m inspired.
