Donnie Darko: a movie recommendation
5 out of 5 stars.
Oh, Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s quite a talented actor, even back when he was just starting out–and Donnie Darko really showcases that.
The movie turns ten this year, but don’t let that scare you off.ย Donnie Darko is a timeless film, and it is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES (second only to Anastasia and Star Wars).
Though it isn’t a horror film,ย it certainly has terrifying elements that make it the perfect flick for some Halloween chills.
(Note: the trailer definitely over-emphasizes the scary stuff.)
This movie is powerful stuff–confusing, twisted, and packed full of resonating subplots. It has an all-star cast (Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal) and an even more all-star soundtrack (Gary Jule’s very famous cover of “Mad World” was made for Donnie Darko).
But what I really love most about this movie is how everything looks. How we get these little flashes in time that are so beautiful, so packed with emotion, you literally have to catch your breath.
If you haven’t picked up on it yet, my love for this movie knows no bounds. I can watch it over and over and over again and come away with something new every time.
So if you’re in the mood for some deep thinking, a mind-twisting thrill, or a beautiful (and painful) teen story, then be sure to watch Donnie Darko.
You tell me: have you seen this movie? What did you think?

I was terrifically confused, but I loved it. (Oh and “Frank” creeped me out!)

ย Frank gave me nightmares for WEEKS. And I think I had to watch it a solid 3 times before finally figured out what was going on.

I loved this movie. I especially loved the soundtrack. “Mad World” is one of those haunting songs I can listen to again and again. Hmm. I may have to watch this tonight. Thanks for the reminder.

Oh, I know! The soundtrack is fabulous–both the 80s tunes and movie score. OH, I just love this movie. ๐

Oooh, a psychological teen movie? That sounds wicked. I’d love to have my head twisted around good and proper for once. ๐
