COVER REVEAL, or Something Strange & Deadly gets a face
I am so, so, SO excited to finally share this with you all.
All you wonderful people who leave me comments and email me and put up with ramblings…all you amazing readers who make my heart melt everyday. TODAY I CAN FINALLY SHARE MY COVER.
I’ve had my cover since July, and the pretty model on it has been staring mournfully at me for months, whispering at me to share her with the world, begging me to put her up on Goodreads…
AND TODAY I FINALLY CAN.
I unveil to you, my dearest friends and readers, the cover for Something Strange and Deadly.
The model is wearing an original, handmade dress (COOL, HUH?) and the photoshoots for books 2 and 3 have already happened–in more amazing gowns, I might add. (Though I have yet to see any pics from said photoshoots…)
AND WAIT, GUYS…
THERE’S MORE.
I.
GOT.
ARCS.
And they are freaking stunning. The cover, the spine (oh, how I just adore the spine), the back (which has my picture!), and even the beautiful chapter headings…
I am in raptures.
(sorry about the glare. I am NOT a photographer. That’s what I have the lovely Amanda Plavich for.)
But to show you how truly exciting this moment was for me, I’ll just share this (embarrassing) video of me getting my ARCs in the mail and acting like an all-around GOON. (In my defense, I was just so happy. Also, the music is totally stolen from Tangled. Also, also, Windows Movie Maker is 100% crap, so don’t judge my movie-makin’ skills by this video.)
So, if you want to get your hands on ARC, keep your eyes LOCKED ON THIS SITE. I will be giving copies away–though when that will be, I can’t say exactly…early 2012?
That said, if you’re really raring to get your hands on a copy (and I mean, who wouldn’t be, right? ;)), you can always email me at susan (at) susandennard (dot) com (and I’ll forward your name to HarperTeen) or try contacting HarperTeen’s publicity department yourself. No guarantees, of course, but there’s also no harm in trying!
♥

Gorgeous cover! Adore the dress and background images…cool spine on the ARC too,
Congrats! 🙂
November 7, 2011 @ 8:02 pm
Thanks!! I am in love with the spine–I can’t lie!! 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 7:58 pm

November 7, 2011 @ 8:04 pm
I was *wondering* how you already knew, Ashelynn! I saw your tweet, and my face went:
o_O heh?
That makes so much sense now. 😀 AND THANK YOU!!!
November 7, 2011 @ 8:03 pm
Oh my god, it is SO BEAUTIFUL! Dark, lovely, atmospheric. I also adore the hint of clockwork in the background!
November 7, 2011 @ 8:04 pm
Thanks, Elizabeth! I totally love the clockwork too. YARGH, I wish people could see it in person because then the clockwork *really* stands out. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 8:04 pm
Eek! The cover is gorgeous! And look at that beautiful ARC. Congratulations! I found your blog originally through Amanda Plavich and I have been coveting your awesome author photos ever since I saw them on her blog. How fun to see one on your ARC now! Wow, that makes me sound a little creepy, LOL! But seriously, you must be so excited. *off to make sure I have your book added to Goodreads*
November 7, 2011 @ 8:06 pm
Pftttt. ::blushes bright pink:: Not creepy, but AWESOME. Your little comment has made me inordinately happy (and aren’t Amanda’s photos just amazing?).
November 8, 2011 @ 1:54 am
Oh, Erin. I love you. lol She really is a creeper, Susan. Don’t let her fool you. 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 8:10 pm
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! YAY for covers!! DOUBLE YAY for ARCs!!!! I freaking love you for making a video of the moment you opened the package. That was awesome.
One more YAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY!!! 😀 😀 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 11:05 pm
HEHEHE. My video is moderately embarrassing, but why not show EVERY step of the way? If you can’t be yourself on your blog, then where the heck can you? 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 8:28 pm
Can I just say that your Little Mermaid shirt (in the vid) is awesome? Oh, and that cover? Holy gown!! The typography is gorgeous too. Love it. Congrats, lady. So exciting 🙂
November 7, 2011 @ 11:06 pm
Thanks, Erin!! <3
Also, I'm delighted to hear you like my shirt. 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 8:30 pm
EEEEE!!! I’m so excited and happy for you, Sooz!!! It’s such a gorgeous cover, and I can’t WAIT to see it on shelves!! <3 <3
November 7, 2011 @ 11:06 pm
I can’t lie, Kitty Kat, I can’t wait either!! 😉 Still so far off, though…
November 7, 2011 @ 8:33 pm
OMG, SO PRETTY! Congrats, these look fantaaaaaaastic. Can’t wait to read! <3 <3
November 7, 2011 @ 11:07 pm
Thanks, Meg!!! 😀 <3
November 7, 2011 @ 8:33 pm
beautiful!!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:07 pm
Thanks, Kate!! I’m glad you think so. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 8:38 pm
The cover is so beautiful! I love all of the clockwork bits in the background. 🙂
November 7, 2011 @ 11:08 pm
I’m also partial to the clockwork bits. They give it just the right touch of “steampunk”. 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 8:40 pm
WOW! SO perfect! I am so happy for you! That is amazing and yes I love the spine and clockword too. Would love the chance to win an ARC. Will stay tuned! Just one point though. Whenever they have a podgy character in a book, the cover still has skinny models. Or is it just me?
I’m so proud of you!Laura
November 7, 2011 @ 11:09 pm
Um, yeah, that was something of an issue for me, Laura. Eleanor is meant to be a voluptuous, normal girl, and Harper did try to find a “bigger” model. This girl was apparently the “largest” to apply!! But ultimately, many covers do shrink the MC–gotta appeal to what we *think* the market wants… Sadly. 🙁
November 7, 2011 @ 11:53 pm
Yeah it is sad indeed. Nevermind. It is so exciting being on this journey with you. Given I’ve been here since you started your synopsis!
I just finished draft 3 of BWBW. Still a way to go yet, but I’m so excited!
Take care,Laura~X~
November 8, 2011 @ 7:36 pm
Yay! That’s a huge accomplishment, Laura–GO YOU. And good luck with it!!!
November 9, 2011 @ 12:42 am
Thank you! I can’t wait for SSAD to come out. I have seen multiple cover reveals on blogs today. People are really excited about it!
Laura~X~
January 25, 2012 @ 4:35 am
she looks so tiny
November 7, 2011 @ 8:41 pm
Oh my God, Susan! I love that cover sooo much. It is gorgeous, absolutely 100% gorgeous. Congrats!!!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:44 pm
YAY! Thanks, Katelyn! I’m so glad you think so!! <3 <3
November 7, 2011 @ 8:43 pm
Oh my gosh, I love your cover! It’s gorgeous and I love the dress!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:45 pm
EE! Thank you, Erica! I’m definitely partial to the dress myself…not that I would probably *fit* in it. 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 8:44 pm
Loving the cover and I’m so happy Sarah facebook’ed about your cover reveal cause now I’ve discovered yet another awesome-looking book and promising read! 🙂 Congrats my dear. x
November 7, 2011 @ 11:45 pm
Thank you SO much (and thanks to Miss Sarah!). I really appreciate you stopping by, Maria!! <3 <3 It's fantastic to "meet" you!
November 9, 2011 @ 4:27 am
Thank you for being so sweet and interactive with your soon-to-be-readers! I’m very happy to “meet” you too. (Miss Maas is very lovely and just as polite and sweet as yourself!) Also may I add that I love the video, makes you more ‘real’ and approachable, which in turn made me feel less shy about commenting. <3 x x x
November 7, 2011 @ 8:54 pm
Love your t-shirt 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 11:46 pm
Ha! Thanks. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 8:54 pm
I’m covering my bases with Twitter and blog commenting 🙂 …so beautiful! And, it makes the book seem all the more real! Yay! P.S…how cute is your dog?!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:46 pm
Hehehe, the dog is KINDA the love of my life. Shhh, don’t tell the Frenchie. 😀
And YAYYY!!! Thanks for all the comments everywhere, Laura! Lots of <3s to you!!
November 7, 2011 @ 9:11 pm
ZOMGDFLSAIUFHSDFPOULAJH!!!!! :DDDD IT’S THE COVER!! This is so exciting and awesome and preeeeeetty.
I wants.
I saw your tweet while I was in BioStats and HAD to go to the link on my nook. And then I had to frantically cover the nook screen because all this awesomeness definitely did not look like my Stats book LOL
I’m off to ask HarperTeens for an ARC now lol Because I must have this book. Like, yesterday 😉 I’m so happy for you, Sooz! <3 <3 <3
Loves,
A
November 7, 2011 @ 11:47 pm
HAAAA!!! Oh, Adriana, how I love you. You get bonus points for looking during BioStats. And let me know what Harper says (I already gave them your name once… 😉 I just KNEW you’d want a copy!).
November 8, 2011 @ 3:55 am
So I e-mailed them, and now I’m decidedly NOT refreshing my e-mail every other minute ;D But I can’t WAIT for this to be out.
Also, I realized that in all my excitement, I didn’t actually comment on the cover, besides the fact that I love it. Seriously, though. I know it’s not necessarily hardcore Victorian Era-looking, but the dress the model is wearing and how dark it is and how the skirt just widens–it’s just so perfect. And I adore how she’s looking straight on, like daring you to say she can’t do it.
The tree in the background. Zomgsh, the TREE. I think it’s my absolute favorite part–so twisted, and creepy, and absolutely beautiful. It took me a second to see the actual background, but I squee-d at the steampunk-ness of it once I did lol
So, in summary, I’d have read this book if the cover was a blank page, but even MORE SO NOW lol And the cover is just SO ATTRACTIVE, it’s bound to catch the eye of all unsuspecting readers wandering through the YA section :DDD
November 8, 2011 @ 7:37 pm
I’m so glad you love it, Adriana! Really!! I hope the “staring straight at you model” appeals to readers passing by–that’s a GREAT thing to have on the book, you know?
AND NOW, if people will just love the STORY as much as the COVER, we’ll be in great shape!! 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 9:24 pm
OMG! Susan, it’s breathtaking! Wow! People SHOULD judge this book by its cover – the words will be as gorgeous as the image, I’m sure!!!
Congratulations!
PS. Why aren’t YOU the model in the fabulous dress?!!!! Is that not in your contract?!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:48 pm
HAHAHA. I wish I could be on the cover…no, actually, that’d be weird. It’s weird enough seeing my face on the back of the ARC!
And YAYAY! I’m so glad you like the cover, Vanessa!! <3
November 7, 2011 @ 9:34 pm
Okay. How freaking beautiful is that cover?? It’s absolutely stunning! I would sooo love to get my hands on an ARC. And, you’re shirt is freaking awesome as well!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:49 pm
Well, Erica, I can forward your name & email to Harper. 😉 Let me know what (if anything) you hear!!
Also, I am VERY glad you like my shirt. I was wondering while making the video if people might just end up thinking I’m odd…or immature. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 9:40 pm
Congratulations on the gorgeous cover! It’s absolutely stunning and I can’t wait to read the book. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 11:49 pm
Thank you SO much, Stephanie! I’m really glad you like it. 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 9:51 pm
That’s amazing! Congrats
November 7, 2011 @ 11:55 pm
Thank you, Erinn!! 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 10:14 pm
OH MY GOD AMAZING. I loooove the beautiful intricate background, plus that special “g” that’s in a different typeface than the rest of the title, plus the model’s straight-on pose, plus the whole freaking colour scheme! <33333 I KNEW your cover was going to be fabulous!!!!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:56 pm
GAH! I’m SO glad you think so, Yahong! I was totally scared you’d be disappointed since it’s not *super* steampunk. 😀 So YAY! You like it! YAY!
November 7, 2011 @ 10:31 pm
Yaaaay! It looks amazing – so excited to see the back cover, too! Woo-hoo! 🙂
November 7, 2011 @ 11:56 pm
Danke sehr, Breeeena!! <3
November 7, 2011 @ 11:00 pm
I am so freaking excited for you!!!! Congrats! It’s all gorgeous, and I can’t imagine how stoked you must be. (And I *so* want your t-shirt! 😉
November 7, 2011 @ 11:57 pm
Hahaha! I’m glad you like my shirt. I feel very cool. 😉 It’s by Junk Food (as are most of my shirts…).
And YAAAY! I AM stoked–especially when I hear that all my friends love it!! 😀
November 7, 2011 @ 11:18 pm
OMG OMG!! OMGGGGGGGG *HUGE SQUEAL*
HOORAY!! The cover!! I’ve been so excited for it. And when last night Savannah said you were going to do a reveal, I was like where is it?!! And now I see this glorious cover in the morning.
And OMG the first page too!!! Any idea when we’ll get to see an excerpt? It’s so beautifullll.
November 7, 2011 @ 11:57 pm
Haha–sorry for the delay, Fiona!! I had to wait for the “official” jpg to get to my inbox. 😀
As for an excerpt, that’s a GREAT question. I promise to let you know as soon as I find out!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:18 pm
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I love the cover. you must be so excited. Happy dance for you. All the best.
November 7, 2011 @ 11:58 pm
GAHHHH!!!!! THANKS, Ladonna!! <3 <3 Happy dances all around!
November 7, 2011 @ 11:22 pm
How awesome!! The cover is freaking gorgeous!! And I love the spine of it
November 7, 2011 @ 11:58 pm
I know–the spine is totally my favorite part too!! THANKS, Sammy!!
November 8, 2011 @ 12:12 am
Wow Susan- congratulations. How cool was it to actually HOLD it in your hands and think, “this is me, I wrote this!”
November 8, 2011 @ 12:21 am
Thank you!! It IS such an amazing feeling. I can’t lie–I had the HUGEST goofiest grin for days…and literally, there were big hearts in my eyes. I found any and every excuse I could to pick it up and just hold it. 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 12:26 am
OH MY GOODNESS! I adore the background of the cover, and I’m sure I’m going to absolutely *drool* over the book whenever I finally get my hands on a copy. I cannot wait!
And you have very good taste in music. 🙂
November 8, 2011 @ 7:38 am
You’re the first person to comment on the music!! 😀 Bonus points to Madeleine!! 😀
And thanks–I’m *really* pleased you like it. <3 <3 <3
November 8, 2011 @ 12:37 am
Oh. My. God. SO FREAKING PRETTY. They did you well, Sooz!
I am so shooting for an ARC.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:39 am
Let me know if you have any success on the ARC front. It sounds like they may not start willingly giving them away until January… ::sigh:: WHO CAN WAIT THAT LONG FOR A BOOK, I ask you? I don’t just mean *my* book, but ANY book!! 😉
November 8, 2011 @ 12:43 am
It’s beautiful! I can’t wait to read it! =)
November 8, 2011 @ 7:40 am
Thank you so much, Stephanie!! I certainly love hearing that!
November 8, 2011 @ 12:49 am
LOVE THIS COVER!
The tree and the dress and the gloves…*swoon* Gorgeous detail on the spine too. Can’t wait to read!!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:40 am
Thank you SO much, Shelby!! I’m so glad to hear you think it comes together well. It’s so hard to get a cover (as the author, I mean) and not over-analyze the crud out of it!! So hearing all the separate parts come together welll–awesome!!
November 8, 2011 @ 1:06 am
It’s gorgeous! Congratulations! I love the background, dress and the gloves or are they sleeves 🙂
November 8, 2011 @ 7:41 am
Gloves, I think…? Honestly, though, now that you say, I have no idea!! 😀 But THANKS, Petra!! <3
November 8, 2011 @ 1:06 am
Oh, that’s quite the cover. 😀 I’ll be sure to pick up a copy when it’s available.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:41 am
Yay! Thank you so much, Douglas–I love hearing THAT! 😉
November 8, 2011 @ 1:12 am
That cover is hot.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:42 am
Awesome. Just awesome, April. <3 You win for most concise comment of WIN.
November 8, 2011 @ 1:33 am
Gorgeous cover! So mysterious and intriguing.
(And you are absolutely adorable!)
November 8, 2011 @ 7:42 am
Ha! Thanks, Loretta!! <3 I love hearing I'm adorable! 😉 Can't lie!!
November 8, 2011 @ 1:53 am
EEEEEKKKKK!! I know we’ve already gone through the ‘EEK’ stage, but I’m still EEKing all over Georgia for you. 😀 😀 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 7:43 am
HEEE! Thanks, Amanda! AND YOUR NAME IS ON IT, AND YOUR NAME WILL BE ON THE FINAL COPY AND EEEEEEEEEK. There can never be enough EEKING, methinks.
November 8, 2011 @ 2:01 am
That’s AWESOME! I LOVE the dress, you should totally talk them into giving it to you. 🙂 At first glance, you just see the forest picture and the girl, but then when you look again…again, freaking awesome!
Congratulations!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:45 am
Ha, I WISH they’d give it to me. I’m sure they’d look at me like:
o_O are you crazy?
Because, you know, handmade gown on tiny model–not usually something they give the author. 😉 BUT, I am SO going to try to get something made. I mean, you gotta have a cool dress for book tours and fantasy conventions, RIGHT?
November 8, 2011 @ 6:23 pm
Exactly 🙂 Still, though, where other people keep china dolls you could keep a tiny model of your characters. That’d be pretty awesome.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:38 pm
Um, I kind of think your idea is BRILLIANT. How COOL would it be to have little versions (action figures, I guess?) of Eleanor and the Spirit-Hunters? I must find a way to make this happen… 😉
November 9, 2011 @ 7:23 am
Haha, definitely! Did you have a lot of say in how the cover turned out? (Some authors say that they don’t and some say that they do.) I never knew that they used action figures for covers like that…learn something new every day, I guess. 😉
November 8, 2011 @ 3:12 am
So exciting! Very cool. I so want an ARC!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:45 am
I’ll put your name on my ARC list, Angelica! No guarantees, but I’ll make sure your name reaches the right person. 😉 YAAY!
November 8, 2011 @ 3:26 am
That’s such a beautiful cover! So exciting! 😀 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 7:46 am
Thank you SO much, Emy!!! <3 <3
November 8, 2011 @ 3:57 am
HOORAY for covers! And ARCs! And fun videos! 😉 My favorite part was the “you know you want it” note I think. lol EEEEE!!! It’s all just so exciting!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:46 am
It IS so exciting. Today (well now yesterday for me) has been a whirlwind of well-wishes–it’s AMAZING!! People are just so great…yourself included. 😉
November 8, 2011 @ 3:59 am
Love it! Can’t wait to read! I also love the spine and can see it now on the library shelf! Fic
Den
So proud of you Susan! Love and pride, Beth Lunsford
November 8, 2011 @ 7:47 am
Aww, thanks, Mrs. Lunsford. You’re the inspiration behind my reader self, and how could I be a writer if not for all the reading?
And wow, thinking about my library spine–you just gave me chills!!
November 8, 2011 @ 4:24 am
Congratulations! Will be waiting for your book next year! <3
November 8, 2011 @ 7:48 am
Yaay! Thanks so much, Rae!!! 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 7:00 am
I love the cover- the dress and the overall atmosphere *thumbs up* congrats 🙂
November 8, 2011 @ 7:48 am
Awesome–I’m glad the overall atmosphere works. Like I said in a comment above, I’ve stared at it so much, I’m starting to get crazy eyes and wonder if it DOES all come together or not!! 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 7:42 am
http://janijon.blogspot.com/2011/11/netgalley.html
=)
November 8, 2011 @ 7:49 am
Aww, Jane. You’re awesome. <3 <3 Thanks so much for the shout-out.
November 8, 2011 @ 8:48 am
Wow, the cover is amazing ♥ I’m definitely going to pre-order this once I get funds in my paypal. Anyway, congrats!!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:32 pm
Thanks, Patty! I love hearing those words: pre-order. J/K!! But I DO love hearing that you like the cover! 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 12:24 pm
Oh, you. Look at it, it’s an actual book. It’s YOUR book, your story. I hope you’re carrying it around with you permanently tucked under one arm. I can’t believe my copy won’t come until July. What am I meant to do until then? I love it all, but I adore the spine–so many really good covers then don’t do anything with the spine, and I always think it’s such a waste! After all, travesty though this is, the book won’t be facing out every single time it’s on display. That spine’s important! I’m so happy for you! (And, as usual, dancing on my blog with cover love.)
November 8, 2011 @ 7:33 pm
Oh, Amie, you’re the BEST. I DEFINITELY have a copy with me at all times…the only hard part is that everyone thinks I’m *giving* it to them when I just want to *show* them. So then there’s this awkward, “Can I have my book back now? No, you can’t keep it because I only have a few. GIVE IT BACK OR I’LL BITE YOUR FACE OFF FOR REALZ.”
November 8, 2011 @ 2:51 pm
HUGE congrats! I don’t even know you and I was excited for you by your video. And as for the cover…simply gorgeous! You have every right to be excited and a bit gooned out! But you shouldn’t be….anyone in your shoes would be so over the top!
Enjoy the moment!!!!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:34 pm
Thanks, Christine! I’m glad my video didn’t permanently scare you away from me. 😉
And I am DEFINITELY enjoying the moment!! 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 3:45 pm
This is an amazing cover. The style of dress the model’s wearing is great for emphasising the time and setting. I especially loved the cogs in the background. Brilliant.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:34 pm
I love the cogs too–they’re probably my favorite part. Well, favorite excluding the spine (have I made my love for the spine clear enough? ;))
November 8, 2011 @ 5:37 pm
Stunning! You deserve to own the dress!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:35 pm
Ha! I wish…how I wish. But I don’t think the creator of the dress would really want me to have it…I shall have to remain content with only the cover instead. 😉
November 8, 2011 @ 6:46 pm
Beautiful cover, Susan! Congratulations!
November 8, 2011 @ 7:35 pm
Thank you so much, Victoria!! <3
November 8, 2011 @ 7:20 pm
Congratulations! It’s beautiful.
November 8, 2011 @ 7:35 pm
Yay! Thanks, Sharon!! 😀
November 8, 2011 @ 7:47 pm
This just makes me giddy, I love it so much!! Yay yay yaaaaaaaaay!
November 10, 2011 @ 11:31 am
Thanks, Happy!!! <3 <3 I'm so glad you think so!
November 8, 2011 @ 11:16 pm
Oh, my gosh! It’s BEAUTIFUL! I love, love, LOVE it!
November 10, 2011 @ 11:31 am
Yay!! Thanks, Peggy. I’m really happy to know you love it. 😀
November 9, 2011 @ 2:34 am
Aaaah your beautiful cover! I love the gears in the background and the colors and her facial expression and the lace on her arms and her DRESS! And I could really just go on and on 🙂
But, but, I need to find out what the word on the street is, and if it’s true! (re: the VERY teasing first page)
November 10, 2011 @ 11:32 am
Oooh, I’m delighted to hear my first page is tempting. 😉 The word on the street…is it true? WHAT IS IT? Hopefully I can post an excerpt soon…
And thanks for the comment! I’m so glad you like the cover. 😀
November 9, 2011 @ 4:19 am
This looks wonderful! You must be very proud!
November 10, 2011 @ 11:32 am
Thanks, Pamela! I AM pretty pleased to share this after so long. It’s just such a cool feeling to have my book IN my hands, you know?
November 9, 2011 @ 8:29 am
Ek! Loveee the cover and synopsis! Featuring your book on my wow post for this week! 🙂

November 10, 2011 @ 11:35 am
I sure hope it is, Katie! It’s up to Wal-Mart to decide if they want to buy copies…but it’ll definitely be in B&N and online. And you can always get your library to buy it! 😀
