Current TV Favorites
Because I’m currently obsessed with iZombie and looking for ANY excused to talk about it, I thought today’s blog would be about the TV I’m enjoying right now.
(And I’d LOVE for you to chime in with your favorite shows! I’m always on the lookout for more!)
Watching Now
iZombie (the CW, Hulu): I love, love, love, love, LOVE this show. Liv Moore = everything I missed about Veronica Mars, and the humor! The banter! The sexual tension and murder mystery in every episode! It’s so good, guys. I really can’t recommend this enough. And if you’re a Veronica Mars fan, then what are you waiting for?! This is THE show for you!
Black Sails (Starz, Amazon Prime): I’m only 4 episodes in on this show, but it’s SO good. In fact, I think each episode gets better than the one before–raising the stakes, pushing characters to their limits, and just going to some DARK places I don’t see often on TV. It’s definitely R-rated, though, so younger readers should probably stay away. 😉
The Wrong Mans (Hulu): The first season of this show was one of my favorite TV experiences of 2014. To my surprise (and delight!), season 2 has proved to be EVEN FUNNIER. We’ve only got one episode left, and I am so sad about this. 🙁
The Daily Show (Comedy Central, Hulu): This is a nightly requirement in my house. Jon Stewart is nothing short of genius, and I honestly trust NO ONE ELSE for my news. (Well, I trust him and NPR. That’s about it.) Seriously: if you’ve never watched the Daily Show before, there’s no time like the present! 😉
Recent Binges
Broadchurch (Netflix): This show was dark, creepy, and VERY intense. I couldn’t stop, though, and I was SO pulled in by the incredible acting and gorgeous setting. If you enjoy murder mystery, then this is a great show to binge.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix): At the suggestion of some friends (*waves at Rachel & Katie!*), I started this show a few weeks ago…and couldn’t stop. It’s SO FUNNY and has such a heartwarming message in each episode.
The 100 (Netflix): I’ve only seen season 1, so no spoilers please!! That said, I cannot WAIT to binge season 2! This show took me completely by surprise. The pilot is kind of terrible, but things really pick up after that. I couldn’t believe how many times I was brought to tears watching this show.
Galvant (ABC, Hulu): This musical comedy took me COMPLETELY by surprise–in the best possible way. Sarah J. Maas and I watched it during our annual NYE trip together…and were hooked. We literally rewatched it all immediately after the first round. So. Funny. SO. Clever.
More Obscure Shows You Shouldn’t Miss
Moone Boy (Hulu): This was my favorite show of 2014. It was so heartwarming, so hilarious, and so unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Chris O’Dowd NAILS it. Do not miss this show–seriously.
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (Netflix): This show took me 100% by surprise last year. The first episode is a bit hokey (okay, the whole SERIES is a bit hokey), but I just fell in love with the characters and the 1920s setting. Plus, the romantic tension for our leading lady detective–ungh!! It’s SO great!
Peaky Blinders (Netflix): Season 1 of this show was one of the best TV watching experience of my WHOLE LIFE. I still think it is almost flawless storytelling. Too bad they ruined it ALL with season 2. Still, if you can, watch only season 1 and prepare to be blown away.
Emma Approved (YouTube): Emma remains one of my favorite Jane Austen’s, so I wasn’t surprised when I fell head-over-heels for this adaptation. SO cute, SO bingeable, and ungh the final kiss!!!! It was SO worth the wait. 😉
Now you all TELL ME what you’re watching!
Please, please! I’d love to have more stuff to add to the queue!

eeeeep we LOOOOVE iZombie!! Is it wrong that I want her and Major to hook up? Also I may actually cry when Jon Stewart’s last show airs.
We also just watched the final episode of Justified – it was so good and I love Timothy Olyphant. I haven’t binge watched anything recently… the last time was the first 3 seasons of GoT but since then we’ve tried to keep up!
I have heard good things about UKS – might have to make more of an effort to watch that one!
Thanks for the new list of shows to check out!

Ooooh, Justified–you enjoyed it?? I’ll have to give that a try!!! 😀
And oh my gosh, why is Major SO HOT?!
jaimearkin
April 20, 2015 @ 3:51 pm
OMG SO HOT!! lol also I don’t ship him with anyone else even if he’s not a zombie.
I loved Justified – lots of violence if you don’t mind that but ugh Timothy Olyphant is *fans self* and I typically don’t go for guys in cowboy hats LOL

YOU got me into iZombie but omg I’m so hooked now lol I want literally everybody to get together. SHIP ALL THE SHIPS. And I 100% agree with the VMars comparison. I’d missed it so much.
I haven’t watched Black Sails or Miss Fisher’s, but I’ve heard SO many good things. I’m gonna have to get to that after I’m done with the Term. Your recs have never led me astray 😉
Have you seen Daredevil? YOU MUST. All 13 episodes are up on Netflix and it stars Charlie Cox (from Stardust, if you’ve seen that) as Daredevil. omg Sooz, it is SO GOOD. I watched all 13 eps in a day and have rewatched several since. It’s on the darker side, ratings wise, mostly because of some violent scenes, but it’s really really awesome.
Plus, Charlie Cox is super cute :)))
Susan Dennard
April 20, 2015 @ 3:10 pm
Ooooh, is Daredevil good??? Netflix recommended it for me, but I’m not *usually* into superheroes. I will DEFINITELY give it a try, though! I totally trust your taste. 😉
Adriana
April 20, 2015 @ 5:35 pm
IT WAS AMAZING.
I mean, ok, I do generally like superhero movies, but more in the moment, if that makes sense? I feel like it’s hard to connect with them in the long run. Which is not the case at ALL for Daredevil. He’s more of a scrappy-street-fighter sort of hero and, man, Charlie Cox does such a good job! I haven’t been able to stop rambling about it to everyone, it’s embarrassing 😉
If you’re going to try it, you have to have to get to the end of episode 2 at least. Best fight scene I’ve seen in a while.
PS: reading this post makes me want to rewatch Emma Approved, that was such a cute adaptation <3 <3

call the midwife on netflix
i’m watching daredevil super slowly right now. the first two eps are like, whatever but i heard it gets really good so we shall see.
have you ever watched bbc’s emma? i thought it was delightful.
p.s. you know…
Susan Dennard
April 20, 2015 @ 3:28 pm
BBC’s Emma–YESSSSSS. Oh my gosh, it was SO well done. They *nailed* the tension.
I haven’t even heard of Poldark, but…I’ll look it up!!
And everyone KEEPS recommending Daredevil, so let me know what you think…

I watch way too much TV, but I am so obsessed with Daredevil right now! I love the superhero stuff, but my friend who is *not* into the superhero stuff also loves this show. It’s so funny seeing how obsessed she is with it. It’s much more mature than Marvel’s usual fare (probably because it’s on Netflix, so it’s more like a cable show), and they do such a good job with everything – story, character development (Vincent D’Onofrio is incredible), and the crazy good fight scenes. I’m 2 episodes from the end and I am dying to finish.
Susan Dennard
April 20, 2015 @ 8:06 pm
Okay, that’s like the 1000th recommendation for Daredevil. I’m starting it tonight–it’s official!! 😉

April 20, 2015 @ 8:07 pm
Have you seen Orphan Black? Season 3 just started but the seasons are short so it’s easy to catch-up/binge watch. The entire premise is about a woman who finds out she is one of many clones!
Susan Dennard
April 20, 2015 @ 8:21 pm
I WANT TO WATCH THIS SOOOOO BAD. I think I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and pay for it…
Caitlin Vanasse
April 20, 2015 @ 10:23 pm
Yeah, the only way to legally stream it in the US is Amazon Prime so even though I’ve wanted to watch it for more than a year I just started it. I hope you like it when you’re able to watch!

Oooo Orphan Black is a must! <3

I’m really going to have to check out iZombie, everyone keeps saying it’s awesome!
Right now I’m obsessed with SUITS. You really get attached to the characters, and Donna is the BOMB. Just finishing a book to turn in to my editor at the moment, but once it’s in and I’m off the hook I’m going to binge watch the latest season released one Netflix!
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:00 pm
Suits! I haven’t watched that but I keep seeing it and thinking it’d be something I like. Thanks for the rec!! 😀
Abby Murphy
April 20, 2015 @ 11:03 pm
I’m the millionth person to suggest this, but YES Daredevil! It’s dark and pretty violent, but the filming and acting are incredible. And I’m so glad you love Miss Fisher! We stumbled on her six months ago and blazed through both seasons.
I also just finished the second season of Endeavour, a prequel to the Inspector Morse series. I’ve never seen Inspector Morse, but Endeavour is frickin’ awesome. Dark, broody, intense, twisty mysteries, and a hot British detective who just can’t get it together where his love life is concerned…so good.
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:01 pm
Miss Fisher!! Such a surprise! I LOVE JACK. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. They have the best chemistry EVER.
Endeavor? I’ve never heard of it, but that sounds like JUST the sort of television my hubby and I love! Can’t wait to try it out!! 😀
Abby Murphy
April 22, 2015 @ 1:02 pm
Agreed! Jack + Miss Fisher are my absolute FAVORITE. That tension!!
Incidentally, my husband gave me the first three books of the series the show is based on. They’re a fun read, and I can totally see where the character came from, but the show is better. Maybe I’d feel differently if I’d read them first!

I think the better question is what am I not watching. I watch (or DVR rather) at least 2 shows a night. It is possible I have a problem. iZombie definitely comes out on top though. It was a must watch for me. I also love The 100. My sister finally convinced me to give it a chance and I ended up watching both seasons during a three day weekend. Now I’m counting down the days till its return.
I have to recommend Sons of Anarchy. I am watching the series for a second time now and its only gotten better and better. I keep noticing things I didn’t the first time. Its dark and gritty, the characters are complex and not to mention there’s an EPIC ship.
Daredevil and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are next on my binge list and now I’m adding Black Sails. 🙂
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:01 pm
Sons of Anarchy!! My BFF got really into that show. Adding it to the list now!! 😀 THANKS!

I love iZombie too. Totally not what I expected. And if you are enjoying The 100 you should totally read the books. When I found out it was based off the book, I had to read it. Of course the show is very different from the books, but I’m enjoying both versions. My absolute favorite show is Once Upon A Time, because I grew up on fairy tales and have always loved them. Secrets and Lies is that new show on AND and it’s intriguing because it’s one of those did he or didn’t he. I feel like I did while reading Gone Girl and The Girl On The Train.
And I just wanted to mention I just finished your trilogy and of course it left me bawling. I met you at Apollycon and getting Something Strange and Deadly was definitely a great decision. Victorian era steampunk zombies. Loved it the moment I started it. I hope to see more from you soon.
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:03 pm
Ohhhh, THANK YOU!!!! Wow. Just wow. I’m SO glad you enjoyed the SS&D books. 😀 Thank you for buying, thank you for reading, and thank you for commenting!!!!! <333
Re: The 100 — yes!! I definitely want to read them! The author is super nice, and I kinda love the idea that it's different from the show. Gives me 2 separate stories!! 😉

If you haven’t tried John Oliver for news yet, he’s a fantastic backup for Jon Stewart 🙂 I’ve now added many of your recs to my Netflix queue! Thanks!
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:03 pm
I KNOW. I looooove John OIiver, but don’t you need HBO to watch?? (When he subbed for Jon Stewart last summer, I thought he was the most amazing thing EVER.)

April 21, 2015 @ 11:57 am
I’m really enjoying Gotham and absolutely love Sleepy Hollow. I couldn’t live without The Walking Dead and Supernatural. For funny, you can’t go wrong with The Goldbergs. Secrets and Lies is a new, very good suspenseful show. Elementary is so smart and greatly written (and the chemistry between Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller is fabulous!) The Blacklist is one of the best shows out there (you just can’t go wrong with James Spader!) I also can’t wait for the season 2 premiere of Penny Dreadful next month (much like Outlander, though, it’s for older readers.)
Thanks for your great suggestions, too, Sooz! iZombie is so awesome!
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:04 pm
Ooooh, The Goldbergs! I’m always looking for something funny/sitcom-y for rough days when I just need to unwind. 😉
And Penny Dreadful! I keeep seeing references to that show! I’m super curious about it now–thanks for the rec!!! <3
Lori T
April 21, 2015 @ 1:29 pm
You’re welcome, Sooz! The Goldbergs is incredibly hilarious, so I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting some great 80’s humor. And Penny Dreadful was so amazing. I loved season 1 and am so excited season 2 is right around the corner. So many great monster re-imaginings (Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, vampires, werewolves, etc), all smashed up into one great show.
Hope you enjoy! <3

iZombie! Yes, I’m now watching and yes, I’ve got my roommate hooked too
More importantly, did you know that the BBC is turning Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell into a series? I keep seeing commercials for it while I’m watching Top Gear and every time I wonder if you’ve heard of it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2548418/
I should probably read the book now though…. 🙂
Susan Dennard
April 21, 2015 @ 1:05 pm
UM I KNOW, RACHEL. And I have been stalking every news update ever since it was officially released as HAPPENING.
Seriously, read the books. Try the audiobook, actually. It’s CRAZY long, but soooooo well done. 😉

Everyone around me has been: THE 100.
I prefer reading, but if it’s murder/mystery, I might shift my anime list around a bit

Yes, yes, YES! iZombie is AWESOME. Have to admit though, only started watching it because I heard Merlin’s Arthur (Lowell, the zombie with the awful dye job) was going to come out of hiding to be in it but Liv is the best <3 The male protagonists are great too (not sure about Lowell yet though because he's charming and therefore suspicious). And Emma Approved! Did you ever watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? Loved how they crossed the two over with Caroline Lee.
Not currently watching anything but last season, How to Get Away with Murder was my LIFE. It was just constant suspense and red herrings and speculation (and awful decision-making skills).
Susan Dennard
April 24, 2015 @ 7:40 pm
Lowell–I KNOW!! Too charming?? Maybe bad….? We shall have to keep watching. 😉
And ooooh, you enjoyed HtGAwM??? I’ve been eying that one…

April 23, 2015 @ 11:22 pm
I really really love Elementary. I think it’s an incredible rendition of Sherlock and I’m so invested in all of the characters!! Plus, Lucy Liu is an AMAZING Watson and it’s incredibly refreshing to see a “mad genius” type character NOT touted as the pinnacle of a human being, but just as flawed as the rest of us.
Susan Dennard
April 24, 2015 @ 7:41 pm
YES!!! This is on my list of “want to watch” but I actually forgot!! Thank you for the reminder!!!! 😀

April 24, 2015 @ 2:21 am
On your list: My fiance and I love Jon Stewart! We also binge-watched Kimmy Schmidt and loved it. (I also just re-binged it this week with my 14 year old sister. She loved it as well.) I have convinced her that she will love The 100… I haven’t seen it yet, but I feel that it will be amazing. =)
On my list: My fiance and I recently binge-watched Parks and Recreation and it is now on both of our ‘favorites’ list! It’s a show that revolves around the characters. If you’re a fan of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-type comedy then I’m sure you’ll enjoy it if you haven’t watched already. We plan on re-watching this summer with my sister.
Copper is a random find. Set in 1860’s NY in Five Points. (I am in love with Gangs of New York.) It’s on Netflix. We only got through the first few episodes and then got distracted… But, it’s definitely something to check out. I’ll have to start it up again!
Also, anything on Food Network! And we recently watched Daredevil… so if you’re in to light-drama and action, then it’s worth checking out even if you’re not too big on superheroes.
Oh, and I am SO excited for Truthwitch!!
Susan Dennard
April 24, 2015 @ 7:42 pm
Parks and Rec!! That show is one of the few shows that made me laugh so hard I had to pause my Roku for a good ten minutes while I collected myself.
Hubby and I just started Daredevil. 3 episodes in and WHOA. SO GOOD. Soooo intense!

April 24, 2015 @ 1:51 pm
Ooooh, iZombie sounds awesome! I keep seeing commercials for it while I watch The Flash (which, by far, is one of the best shows on TV.) It’s a superhero show, but it also has elements of a mystery and some romance (but it’s the cute kind.) Also, it turns some tropes on it’s head.
I keep hearing goof stuff about Daredevil, too. Since the main character’s blind and fights crime… Ooooh, I wanna see it!
Susan Dennard
April 24, 2015 @ 7:43 pm
Oooh! The Flash! I haven’t seen that yet, but I’ve heard good things. And Daredevil is AMAZING, but…whoa! Violent and really dark!!! 😉

April 24, 2015 @ 7:21 pm
If you like Black Sails, you might like Vikings on the History Channel. Dark and Rated R for sure, but a great story about people forced into unexpected roles, forgiveness, destiny, and faith…So interesting!
Susan Dennard
April 24, 2015 @ 7:43 pm
Ooooh, thanks!! That’s the second Vikings rec!! I’m definitely adding it to my queue now!

The 100 & iZombie are such good shows! I also enjoyed Galavant, very funny. I am glad you decided to watch them Susan. I got super obsessed too. But hey, I watch SO much tv it’s not even funny 🙂
You should also try Psych, Reign & Once Upon A Time if you get a chance. Based on the ones you listed here, I think you would enjoy them in particular!
Susan Dennard
May 3, 2015 @ 6:17 pm
PSYCH!!! That is–no joke–one of my all-time favorite shows. I actually cried in the final episode because I was SO SAD it was over. If there was one show I would ask to come back on the air, it’s Psych.
Alexa S.
April 27, 2015 @ 8:14 pm
EMMA APPROVED! I was obsessed with that web series. It’s so, so worth it just to make it all the way to that final kiss. Now I just want to rewatch that episode…
Also, I need to catch up on iZombie! I saw the first episode and enjoyed it tremendously 🙂
Susan Dennard
May 3, 2015 @ 6:18 pm
Yesssss–you MUST catch up and then tell me what you think!!! 😉 (Bradley James is SO HOT in the last 2 eps!)

April 27, 2015 @ 11:01 pm
I can’t believe I missed this! I love iZombie right now too! I also just finished Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Parks & Recreation on Netflix. SO GOOD. Broadchurch is on my list next, as well as Daredevil! I watched the first episode of The 100 recently and liked that a lot. 🙂
Your recommendations all sound really good! Honestly I’ve been in sort of a post-Netflix-binge slump, so I’ve mostly been watching anime like Sword Art Online, Full Metal Alchemist, and Attack on Titan. All excellent! 🙂
I’m going to check out your other recs! Also, high five for Jon Stewart and NPR. I don’t want him to leave! 🙁
Susan Dennard
May 3, 2015 @ 6:18 pm
I’m really curious to see what Trevor Noah will do with the show. When John Oliver took over last summer, I was like, “I’m not sure about this.” But by the end of his stint, I ADORED him and didn’t want to see him go! I’m hoping the same happens with Noah…
Jamie Canaves
April 28, 2015 @ 11:15 pm
I had just finished watching Veronica Mars for the first time when iZombie started and I LOVE both. Also watching Buffy/Angel for the first time (thank you Netflix for letting me watch what I couldn’t during the pre-DVR ancient days!)…
Shows I know I LOVE because I watch them live with commercials because I can’t wait- Orphan Black (amazing and fantastic female characters), The Good Wife, Archer, iZombie, Grimm (*so* glad I stayed past the beginning when the graphics were weak bc the characters/stories are great!) and Mad Men (because it’s the final few of the series).
First two ep of Bloodline were really good so I’ll be watching that and Daredevil once I finish some shows.
Susan Dennard
May 3, 2015 @ 6:19 pm
Orphan Black has been recommended so many times now, I KNOW I have to just suck up my cheapness and buy it on Amazon prime. 😉 I’m *really* excited to see what the hype is about!
Jamie Canaves
May 3, 2015 @ 6:58 pm
It was so good I actually went through the annoying hassle of renting it one disc at a time through Netflix. The waiting between discs drove me mad lol After that I got a season pass on Tivo. Maybe someone you know owns it on dvd?

iZombie is BAD #SS!!!! So much fun. Who came up with that idea and why wasn’t it me!!!! I watch way too much TV. Not admitting to anything else, lol.
Luna Kukaracha
May 17, 2015 @ 1:45 am
I haven’t watched any of these, except the 100, but I’m excited to try! As a recommendation, I recommend BBC’s Sherlock. Also BBC’s Sherlock. Finally, Sherlock. SHERLOCK. It’s amazing, with dark humour and wit and it’s adorable and thrilling and absolutely hilarious The first episode’s British accents may be a little hard to understand, but one quickly adapts and falls in love. But I warn you, It will soon lead to absolute madness…
Shannelle C.
May 23, 2015 @ 12:14 pm
YES to iZombie! Rob Thomas really knows how to create his characters and his love triangles. I really didn’t see that twist in Lowell’s character coming, and as much as that actor is so gorgeous (I get my dose of him as Arthur in Merlin), I love the development of Major’s character. I feel so much for him.
Ravi still remains my favorite character, though. Bless Ravi.
