Publishing Industry Lowdown (June 25-June 29)

It’s that day again–time for Sooz’s YA and MG Publishing Industry Lowdown. The general idea is that I share all the deals I know 0f in the young adult and middle grade publishing world each Friday.

My source for deal news is Publishers Marketplace, which requires a paid subscription. As such I’m only sharing part of the information here–basically, just author names and pitches. If you want to know deal sizes (e.g. advances), editors, publishers, and agents, I highly recommend you sign up for PM–it’s totally worth the cost!

So, this week was busier than last week, but still SUPER quiet. Ah, the beauty of publishing’s summer schedule…

Mark Steensland’s THE REDEMPTION GAME, about a 12-year old boy who must help his magician father find a traveling carnival that has been transformed into a deck of playing cards.

Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman’s young adult ZITS, adapting the popular comic strip about teenager Jeremy Duncan into a series of original novels, pitched as “Big Nate for YA,” beginning with CHILLAX, in which Jeremy and his friends are counting down to the Gingivitis rock concert.

Erica Orloff’s young adult SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS, about a teen girl who discovers her father is actually Morpheus, and whose nightmares and dreams begin following her into reality, to both frightening and romantic results, and the Aunt Aphrodite who helps her navigate her new reality.

John Madormo’s middle grade CHARLIE COLLIER, SNOOP FOR HIRE, book 3 in the middle-grade series starring brainy boy sleuth Charlie Collier, a 12-year-old self-appointed private investigator who solves mysteries for his classmates, for publication in Fall 2013.

Sandra Waugh’s LARK RISING, the story of a clairvoyant sixteen year-old, who is charged to rescue her village from attack, only to discover she is destined for a far greater purpose – to save the Earth from utter destruction – which she bravely attempts with the help of a gnome, a white horse, and a young man she loves but is fated to kill her, and FALLING RAIN, the next in GUARDIANS OF TARNEC series.

GET REAL author Mara Rockliff’s middle grade BUFFALO BILL’S WILD WEST, which explores how a seemingly small piece of showbiz history shaped our modern notion of celebrity culture.

The younger sisters on E!’s hit reality show Keeping Up with The Kardashians Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner’s young adult dystopian novel that takes place in a world none of us have ever seen and will follow two sisters on a journey filled with terror, mystery, drama and love, for publication in Summer 2013.

Arin Greenwood’s young adult THE DREAM DIARIES, in which a high school senior searches Washington, D.C. for her kidnapped father, using clues found in her eerily prescient younger brother’s diary and discovers devastating secrets about her family along the way.

Michelle Houts’s middle grade WINTERFROST, what should have been an ordinary Christmas in Denmark for a twelve-year-old and her baby sister quickly turns extraordinary when unexpected events take her parents away for a few days, important details are overlooked, and her sister goes missing.

Allan Woodrow writing as Fowler DeWitt’s middle grade THE CONTAGIOUS COLORS OF MUMPLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL, about a mysterious and wacky illness that’s sweeping the school and the 6th grade scientist who cracks the case.

Tracy Lane’s young adult PARANORMAL PROPERTIES, in which a teen makes a deal with a ghost and agrees to help investigate a 61 year-old murder, for publication in Spring 2013.

Other Stuff

Sorry to push my own links on you, but these days, I don’t get much time to Explore The Interwebs. I haven’t even watched the final Korra yet (GASP O_O I KNOW) because I’ve had too much Other Stuff to do. Alas…

If you haven’t entered the giveaway for a pre-order of Something Strange and Deadly + 2 signed bookplates, then you can do that here.

If you haven’t taken a sneak peek at the Official Something Strange and Deadly book trailer OR signed up for the ARC tour giveaway, signed book giveaway, or book swag package giveaway, then you can do that here. Oh, but you have to do the Scavenger Hunt first! 😉 It’s easy, though–I promise.

Finally, there are some other places on the web to win copies of the book. HarperTeen is giving it away on Goodreads and Lady Blythe Harris (♥) is giving it away on her blog.

Finally, if you have any insight to offer on YOUR favorite necklace, please share! So far, everyone’s suggestions and preferences have been INVALUABLE. Thanks guys–really. I ♥ you all so very much.

You tell me: Do YOU have any big news to share?
