Something Strange & Deadly Book Club Week 3
Welcome to week 3 in the Something Strange & Deadly book club!
If you missed the awesome discussions last week, be sure to check them all out here. I’ve got the full list of people who’ve shared their responses with me via the participation prize form and week 2 giveaway form.
Now, to choose the winner of the second week’s prizes–a signed copy of Angelfire by Courtney Moulton, Angelfire swag, a signed copy of SS&D or ADS&L, and signed swag…
Thank you to everyone who participated, and look below for THIS week’s prizes. 😉
Oh, and–whether you participate in this book club or not–you’ll definitely want to stop by the Epic Reads discussion board! So far they’ve…
- Shared pictures of 1876 Philadelphia!
- Discussed their first impressions of Daniel Sheridan!
- Talked about their favorite characters in the series!
- Answered OUR discussion question about Mrs. Fitt
- Compared Victorian society to modern society
If you don’t want to answer this week’s discussion question, that’s fine! You can chime in next week (the final week). One discussion qualifies you for the participation prize. 🙂 What is the prize? A copy of the e-novella A Dawn Most Wicked or an exclusive cut scene from A Darkness Strange and Lovely.
Of course, if you want to be eligible for this week’s AWESOME giveaway, you’ll want to be sure you answer this week’s discussion question somewhere on the web (publicly visible, of course) before Monday of next week (8/26), when I choose a winner!
This Week’s Giveaway Prizes
- Signed copy of Aimée Carter’s Goddess Test
- Signed copy of Something Strange & Deadly or A Darkness Strange & Lovely
- Signed SS&D swag!
To sign up for this week’s giveaway, fill out this form after you’ve answered Week 3’s discussion question. Remember, you can answer EITHER the question for book 1 OR book 2. 🙂
And of course, you can still (if you haven’t yet) sign up for the participation prize by filling out this form after you’ve answered a single discussion question.
Something Strange & Deadly Discussion Question #3
Eleanor finds herself more and more intrigued by (perhaps even attracted to) Daniel Sheridan, the inventor of the Spirit-Hunters. What is it about him that appeals to her? And vice versa, what do you think attracts Daniel to Eleanor?
Then there’s Clarence Wilcox, the seemingly perfect eligible bachelor. Why do you think Eleanor doesn’t like Clarence?
Historical Extra:
Some of my favorite books feature heroines being pushed into courtship with one fellow–the man who society deems appropriate–while their heart yearns for someone else. Books like Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion, North and South–they all present a romantic theme of lovers separated by class, society, family, etc. My all-time-favorite book of this sort is hands-down A Room with a View by E.M. Forster, and I don’t think it’s mere coincidence that George is sort of like Daniel and Cecil a bit like Clarence…
If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it, and you can even check out this FIRST EDITION from 1908 here!
A Darkness Strange & Lovely Discussion Question #3
In 1876, Paris was really the most glamorous city on earth. The City of Light with its electric street lamps, it’s uniform (and gorgeous) beige buildings and slate rooftops, the museums and gardens–to say nothing of all the beautiful people and clothes. It’s no wonder the Spirit-Hunters find themselves distracted from the Dead by luncheons and salons, new clothes and new equipment. Do you think, if you were in their shoes, you might also be easily distracted by all the wonders Paris holds? Or would you be better able to force it all aside and focus on the rising problem of les Morts?
Historical Extra:
Peek inside the Bibliotheque Richelieu, where Eleanor and Daniel research the Black Pullet. (Sorry, it’s in French!)
Or explore the Palais Garnier, where Eleanor attends her very first ball!
And there we have it, friends! That’s week 3 for our discussion of Something Strange & Deadly and A Darkness Strange & Lovely! Stay tuned for a fun movie casting thing on Wednesday, and on Friday, I’ll have a list of all your awesome discussions!
Oh, and in case you missed the playlist that goes with the dynamite factory chapters in Something Strange & Deadly, you can listen to it right here and then read about each musical piece (and why I picked it) here.
If you have any questions or want to go ahead and share your discussion, feel free to link to it in the blog comments.
Or feel free to reblog/answer me on Tumblr.
Or, you can always talk about it on Twitter or Facebook.
Thank you, and don’t forget to AIM FOR THE KNEES!

I think Eleanor finds Daniel appealing for the same reason that I found him appealing: he’s mysterious. I absolutely loved Daniel’s sarcasm and how he called her by nicknames (such as Empress), which Eleanor also secretly liked. I think Daniel likes how Eleanor is capable of surprising him. He immediately judged her upon their first encounter, but some of the things she says to him or does catches him off guard.
I think Eleanor didn’t like Clarence for the same reason that I didn’t like him: he’s too boring and expected her to behave like a “proper lady.” What’s the fun in that?

Haha….I came here about to say the same thing as Sarah, I won’t repeat her but I believe that Eleanor liked him for him mysteriousness,

You’ve got me thinking Howard’s End now so I looked up that story and it’s also written by E.M. Forster, too!!! I had no idea! Merchant Ivory must have had a thing for him or something!!! I actually saw Howard’s End in the theater! *sigh*
I’m going to have to read Room with a View now!!!! Thanks for kicking the classics at me 😉
