5 out of 5 stars. My mind was literally blown after finishing this (read my Goodreads review if you don’t believe me). All I was really capable of doing was gaping at the computer screen and desperately wishing the sequel, Sapphire Blue, was available now. Or that my German skills were better so I could […]
It’s that day again–time for Sooz’s YA and MG Publishing Industry Lowdow. The general idea is that I share the biggest news in the young adult and middle grade publishing world each Friday–big deal*, important changes, etc. Note: My source for deal news is Publishers Marketplace, which requires a paid subscription. As such I’m only […]
As you might have gathered from the blog title and image, I visited a zeppelin museum over the weekend. But not just any zeppelin museum–THE zeppelin museum. You see, only a hop, skip, and a jump from where I live in Deutschland is Friedrichshafen, the birthplace of the zeppelin. And, because this monstrous flying machine […]
I’ve talked about productivity before. About how BICHOK is one sure-fire way to get your writing where it needs to be. About how focused practice is the only way to get better. But what about those times when your self-motivation (if you even have it to begin with!) starts to flag? What about those days […]
5 out of 5 stars. I picked this book up based on a friend’s gushing, and even then, my first thought was, “Angels? Huh.” Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Then I was desperately engrossed and could not put the book down until the last page. In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees […]

I said my method for selecting a setting in Something Strange and Deadly was unscientific, remember? Well, just look at how I wound up choosing Victorian times. I thought it was cool. I thought it would add conflict, what with the claustrophobic etiquette and patriarchy. Yeah. Very inspired, huh?
It should come as no surprise that sometimes people ask me where I came up with the idea for Something Strange and Deadly. My usual response involves a rambling, convoluted explanation about planets aligning, mystical dreams, and goat sacrifices. Well, I finally decided to just write it all out coherently. But if I’m going to […]
5 out of 5 stars. Rick Riordan’s first installment of the Percy Jackson series, The Lightning Thief, is so, SO good! I honestly don’t think I have enjoyed a middle grade novel this much since Harry Potter (no joke!). What’s not to love about modern day Greek myths and fish-out-of-water (quite literally) heroes? After getting […]
